Adobe Awards

MOTORIDERY from Ivan Alonso on Vimeo.
I plan on entering this when I get the voice over completed. The animation is getting better too.

The main reason I want to enter this is because of the way it uses adobe products. Thanks to adobe, I have designed a toolkit of visual language in illustrator Cs5 and composed screens in Photoshop Cs5. Taking it further to the final stretch I used adobe after effects Cs5.5 to animate the app as well as export an MOV that explains the culture and app. I think it speaks to how most design is. Never in one place or program.

UX: NELSON ATKINS - HANDBUILT - FINAL

map, reference guide, stickers, and event take-away
logo and color palette
map, infographic, and events all on one french fold
sculpture station stickers
collect them all
collect them all and get the sticker kit

use sticker kit to make your own sculpture in the art tent
reference guide and educational booklet

color coded correlations

For the theme hand built we went with a formal approach that made use of simple, off-kilter geometric shapes. The typography is hand lettered giving an authentic hand built feel. That in addition to our bright but warm and inviting color palette seemed to appeal to a younger audience while maintaining a level of sophistication for older children and their parents. Hypothetically the Families would receive a map and a sculpture reference guide. The infographic located on the back of the map would prompt families to go to each sculpture station at which they would receive sticker badges. The reference guide explains the connection between the shapes that have been assigned to each sculpture and the sculpture itself. For instance, a rectangle is paired with RUMI. Rumi is made of I-beams which are in the shape of a rectangle. Therefore, with the Rumi sticker badge, the children will receive a rectangle sticker sheet at the art tent. These little moments add an educational value to the reference guide as well as the whole experience. When all the sticker badges are collected the children would receive a sticker kit (the correlating shapes are located in the reference guide) They would use the sticker sheets to HAND BUILD their own sculpture or if they so choose, use the sculpture reference guide to replecate their favorite sculpture of the day. These activity sheets are take aways that families could potentially hang on the fridge or throw in a scrap book.

User Experience

This semester in UX has been a learning experience. I guess thats what all classes are supposed to be, right? Anyway, I think this semester helped me realize how important research is. Not just internet and library research, rather diving into real life research. Primary research opposed to secondary can offer more insight through observation that a book cannot tell. Knowing who the audience is makes design resonate more with that specific audience. This consideration by designers makes or breaks good design. Tailored design, although really specific and only good for a specific audience, can serve as a really useful tool for certain sub-cultures. Not all design has to be this specific but considering the audience and what they want, need, and hope for can make the project worth a lot.

This is the process for an app I have been conceptualizing on for Motorcycle enthusiasts. A value that we identified during our user research was the A. riding and B. riding with friends. I wanted to make an iphone app that would allow the user to be connected with riders in their area allowing them to join and schedule rides, social events ( aka hanging at the bar) and setting up charity rides. The app is responsive to "current location" that the iphone uses for its GPS. The user inputs his or her interests and key criteria when prompted while signing up. a profile is made for them and they can then start finding rides and riders. In addition to this main component of the app, the application will also provide bar and dive information and locations, weather widgets, gas station location, mechanic shops and more. Hopefully the app would be developed to feed information from a meta data base that only pertains to the interests of each individual. This is what makes it truly tailorable.

UX reflection + plan

This Saturday was user testing day for our Nelson-Atkins Wayfinding project. Despite having been just a "pretend" run through, there was a lot of great feedback from the families. It was helpful to see the actual interaction with the map and the activity to see what was working and what was not.

Deciding:

  • +between using stickers or using cut and pasted paper
  • +reducing the components so that there won't be as much to hold onto or lose
  • +removing the labels for the blank sculpture activity paper
  • +getting rid of the belly band(?)

TAILORED ADVERTISEMENT FINAL: biker subculture

WHO?
Biker Sub-culture & Snap-On tool Co.

THE COLLATERAL
This is a postcard that would be mailed out with motorcycle parts from various partnering on-line warehouses. For Instance, John Orders his Screaming Eagle and cold-air intake filter from jpmotorcycle.com. When he receives his box, the advertisement for snap on is placed inside with the invoice.

THE SCOOT
Its a common thing for Bikers (generally the older men) to refer to their bike as a scooter. The terminology is recognized by bikers of every age and has been shortened to scoot which is interchangeable when referring to the act of riding or the bike itself. The use of the language makes the brand more relate-able.

WHY SNAP-ON?
The culture values customization and working on the bikes themselves. They often have project bikes and enjoy taking care of their “baby.” A project bike is an older motorcycle that is in progress of restoration or customization. A culture that is so invested in maintaining and upgrading their bikes would value tools. Not just any tools. They want quality. Top of the line bike? why not have top of the line tools?
My copy is addressing that, if you (the biker) Have better, more efficient tools and tool boxes, you will have more time for the ride. More time for both the act of riding and time for the ride itself (the bike)

Motorcycle Club Secondary Research

D E F I N I N I N G   A   C R U I S E R

Contemporary models are modeled after Harley-davidsons and Indians. Cruisers are designed with a laid back riding positions.  Cruiser rider generally is set into a position with feet forward and hands in a neutral or high position. This makes cruisers a popular choice for casual riding. Many cruising motorcycles have limited performance and turning ability due to a low-slung design.

60 percent of motorcycle sales are cruiser models.

Colors, or patches, are each individual clubs logo. These can be sewn onto their leather gear, painted on, or tattooed onto the person.

Cuts are the leather or jean vests that are typically seen on participants of motorcycle culture.

The AMA is the American Motorcyclist Association that organizes many activities and fights for motorcyclist rights. There are over 300,000 members of this club.

The RICO act was designed to allow Federal Prosecutors to go outside the normal rules of conduct and evidence to gain convictions.

Registered Motorcycle groups, which operate within the law, were described as making up 99% of motorcycle riders in 1950 by the AMA. Usually these groups form because they share common interests along with their love of motorcycles. Other groups are so diverse that the only thing common between members is the fact that they ride motorcycles.

Outlaw Motorcycle groups also known as 1%ers is biker talk for the 1% of motorcycle riders who operate “outside the law”. Common biker gangs, like the Hells Angels, can use this patch as a symbol of rebellion.

The Iron Order Motorcycle Club formed in a garage in January 2009. Their website lists their common values as brotherhood, friendship, community, contribution, and an overarching sense of national patriotism and pride.  Membership is described as a privilege and they are against druggies, pushers, and pimps.

Sub Culture: The MC World

User X Reading Response

This reading brings to the table, the idea of Qualitative research informing design for a more meaningful experience for the user. More importantly a designers involvement in a combination of ethnography methods, Qualitative research, Quantitative research, and anthropology yeilds more true products that resonate. With the study of sub cultures comes more obsticles. The reading talks about the symbols of Punk Jewlery and characteristics of skin heads that define the culture to the culture. In order to truely understand the subculture/counterculture its important to see and engage with the culture in everyday activity. If the research is not done in a Qualitative way, there is too much room for speculation rather than observation. I would like to sum up with what Henry Dreyfuss said. "Field research is crucial to industrial design" same goes for any design!
